Bowls and Boxes

Back to OmaNOpa.com

This is the first bowl I have completed for some time. It is spalted maple from a tree that a neigbor cut down after it had been dead for some time. In addition to the spalting, there are some worm or beetle holes in the wood. A couple cracks also add to the character of this bowl.

This bowl is just under 5-1/2 inches high and is just 7 inches in diameter at the outside of the rim.

Because of the varied character of the piece, I have three views of it posted here..

An oak bowl. From a deadfall on the acerage owned by my son-in-law's family. It looks like a cross between a wooden brake drum and an offering plate, but it is a bowl and it can hold things. I hope to work on its finish yet in the future, when I get the time and possibly some equipment to do so.
Another view of the oak bowl. Since these pictures were posted, the bowl has warped to the point that it is one inch longer with the grain that across the grain.

One of the first successful turnings I was able to complete. Spalted maple rescued from a friends wood pile.

Very interesting grain and spalt on this piece.

My daughter and her husband gave me a chunk of wood from a tree in their back yard. I think it is a type of ash, but am not certain. It's not like either the maple or the oak that I have turned. I was able to make a sizable lidded box from it.
